AIT inspires young researchers at the Children's UNI Tulln

A week full of discoveries and experiments with the AIT Bioresources team

From 19 to 23 August 2024, the KinderUNI Tulln at GartenTulln once again transformed the AIT Bioresources Competence Unit site into a place of curiosity and discovery for children aged eight to twelve. Under the guidance of experts, young researchers were introduced to the fascinating world of science.

A series of exciting lectures and workshops gave the children the opportunity to explore topics such as plants, animals, microorganisms and the omnipresent problem of microplastics. The age-appropriate programmes not only sparked an interest in research and education, but also promoted an understanding of complex scientific contexts.

Practical insights into the world of science

A particular highlight was the workshop ‘Microplastics in agricultural systems’, which was led by chemist Claudia Preininger and plant and microbe expert Marlies Polt. Claudia Preininger explained to the children how plastic that finds its way onto fields through compost or agricultural tools, for example, decomposes into ever smaller pieces under the influence of weather and soil organisms and is transported into deeper layers of soil. Marlies Polt added: “We not only want to impart theoretical knowledge to the children, but also give them the opportunity to become active themselves in the laboratory.” A particular highlight for the children was the production of a biodegradable plastic film, which they were able to make themselves as part of the workshop.

An unforgettable experience for young scientists

The workshops were organised in collaboration with the NETmicroplastic research project and offered the children not only exciting insights into everyday scientific life, but also the opportunity to conduct their own research, experiment and give free rein to their creativity. The week culminated in the graduation ceremony on 23 August, at which the young researchers received their certificates.
