Between Silicon Valley and Shanghai: How do we secure technological sovereignty?

10.06.2021
Matthias Weber as a guest at the online edition of Club Research

How can we preserve decision-making authority in an economic system with increasingly dense networks of relationships? This question is as old as globalisation itself, but has recently become increasingly urgent: COVID-19 lockdowns and the race for vaccines, the Suez Canal disaster, burgeoning trade disputes and shifts in the global power structure are undermining confidence in global supply chains and fuelling concerns about losing more and more of our own political room for maneuver between digital oligopolies and economic powers striving for dominance.

The last issue of Club Research dealt with the topic of technological sovereignty. After a keynote speech by Prof. Uwe Cantner (Professor of Economics, Friedrich Schiller University Jena; Chairman of the Expert Commission for Research and Innovation), there was also a high-level discussion on this highly topical issue with Sabine Herlitschka (CEO, Infineon Austria Deputy President, Council for Research and Technology Development) and Matthias Weber (Head of AIT Center for Innovation Systems and Policy).
