Emanuel Sandner, AIT Center for Health and Bioresources, was honoured with the Best Poster Award at the Europe Biobank Week 2024 in Vienna for his poster on data protection-friendly linking of clinical data. This award recognises outstanding scientific work in the field of biobank innovation and data protection.

The Europe Biobank Week 2024, which took place in Vienna in mid-May, is regarded as the most important meeting of the global biobanking community. Under this year's motto "Strengthening Biobanks and Biorepositories: Collaborative Approaches for a Sustainable Future", the latest innovations and research in biobanking were presented. The conference included keynote presentations, panels and workshops organised by the ESBB and BBMRI-ERIC.

Privacy-friendly solution for linking clinical data from independent platforms

The award-winning poster by Emanuel Sandner, together with AIT Digital Health expert Dieter Hayn, is entitled "Privacy-Preserving Record Linkage between the SIOPEN BIOPORTAL and the RD-Connect Genome Phenome Analysis Platform via the EUPID Services". It presents an innovative method of linking clinical data from different platforms, such as biobanks and analysis centres, in a privacy-friendly way. This technology makes it possible to securely link sensitive patient data without jeopardising patient privacy. Emanuel Sandner emphasises: “Our work shows how important it is to develop data protection-friendly solutions that enable the linking of clinical data with biobanking data. In this way, we can advance research while protecting patient privacy.”

The Digital Health Information Systems Competence Unit of the AIT Center for Health and Bioresources is doing pioneering work in the field of digital health and privacy-preserving record linkage. With projects such as "D4Health Tirol" and the technical basis for HerzMobil Tirol and Styria, the AIT is continuously advancing progressive solutions in the fields of data science and telemedicine. The development of Health Data Space Nodes and support for the European Health Data Space emphasise the AIT's commitment to innovative and secure data management solutions.
