Better recycling of lithium-ion batteries - Marcus Jahn invited to the Ö1 program matrix

01.07.2024

On Friday, June 28, the Ö1 series "matrix - computer & neue medien" focused on the question of how efficient battery recycling can be achieved. According to forecasts, there will be more than ten times as many electric vehicles on the road in the European Union in 2030 as there are today. This turnaround in transportation will largely depend on the batteries required. While the range of electric vehicles is hardly a problem anymore, the inefficient recycling of electric car batteries remains a major challenge, as it destroys valuable raw materials. New raw materials that replace lithium are also intended to make batteries more environmentally friendly.

Marcus Jahn, Head of the Battery Technologies Competence Unit at AIT, was a guest on the show. Jahn and his team are working on solutions to overcome these challenges and at the same time strengthen European battery production. One example of this is the STREAMS research project led by AIT and funded by the EU.

The program entitled "Battery recycling: better to shred than burn" can be listened to here (in German):
