Researchers and global players worldwide are working to develop quantum computers. But how do these machines work? And what can you do with them? These questions were the focus of the discussion series "Wissen schafft Diskurs" (Knowledge Creates Discourse), and one key message quickly became clear: we can no longer avoid quantum computers. They are already a reality.

"There is also one in Europe that can already be used," said Nico Einsidler, a Quantum Ambassador at IBM who is involved in the production of such devices.  The quantum computer can be accessed via a cloud, partly for free and partly for a fee. But quantum leaps are still a long way off: "We are still in our infancy. We still have to wait three, four, five years."

Helmut Leopold from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) considered it important to have the opportunity to shape the technology during development, to be able to deal with it at a very early stage.
