EU WORKSHOP ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN LOWER AUSTRIA

11.04.2022
AIT organises an EIT Food Grow Project workshop on 25 May.

On 25 May 2022, the AIT organises a workshop on "Sustainable soil management in food production" for producers and small and medium-sized enterprises in the primary food production sector. The workshop organised in the scope of the EIT Food Grow project will take place online and on-site in the Ötscher Nature Park. In one day, top experts will present innovative approaches to make production more efficient while protecting biodiversity and the environment in a sustainable way.

On 25 May 2022, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), in cooperation with Lunds University (Sweden), BGI and Food4Sustainability CoLAB (Portugal) and Vitagora (France), will organise a workshop in the framework of the EIT Food Grow Project on-site and online. All producers and small and medium-sized enterprises in the primary food production sector are invited to learn more about soil and its use in sustainable agriculture. Experts will inform about measures to improve soil fertility. They will explain how important healthy soil is for the environment and food production and how soil health can be actively improved. AIT coordinator of the workshop, Tanja Kostic, microbiome expert at the AIT Center for Health and Bioresources, explains: "With this workshop we want to actively support all farmers in food production to continue to provide us with high-quality food, to make their businesses fit for the future and at the same time to protect biodiversity and the environment". These are the questions we are focusing on:

  • What can we learn from pioneer farmers about soil fertility potential?
  • What does regenerative agriculture look like in action?
  • How can we increase soil diversity on a farm?
  • What is the importance of soil microbial life for agriculture?

Why soil is so important in agriculture

Soil is the basis for the production of almost all food on earth. Soil not only provides us with food but also purifies water, provides habitat for animals and microorganisms, and contributes to climate resilience. Only healthy soil can fulfil these functions. Currently, only 25% of soils in the EU are classified as healthy. In the Soils Mission, the EU aims for 75% of soils to be healthy by 2030. The workshop explains how an improvement of the soil can be achieved in agricultural practice. The speakers are experts from science and agriculture who are pioneers in this field.

About EIT Food Grow Workshops

EIT Food Grow Workshops are two educational events focused on the trends and latest technologies for sustainable agriculture. The aim is to discuss and rethink practices and techniques used in the field, explore new business models based on new potentials and technologies, and build a network of contacts within the European sustainability ecosystem.
