The Austrian Society for Environment and Technology (ÖGUT) awarded the best projects and role models in the field of sustainability for the 34th time.

"The winners of the ÖGUT Environmental Award 2020 are role models, providers of ideas and signposts - they show how commitment in the field of sustainability can be translated into concrete projects. I warmly congratulate the award winners," says Federal Minister for Climate Protection Leonore Gewessler on the occasion of the online award ceremony.

The project "youth codes" consisting of the project consortium of AIT, RDC (Research & Data Competence), FH Joanneum, Integral and tbw research was nominated for the ÖGUT Environmental Award 2020 in the category "Participation" with two other projects.

The mobility turnaround needs the understanding and active participation of the young generation to bring about lasting changes in behaviour. However, the topic of sustainability currently plays a rather subordinate role for many young people. Behavioural changes need an overall view and understanding of future scenarios in order to select those change options that correspond to the respective lifestyle and self-image. It is not enough to teach only partial aspects. With the project "youth codes - ways to change mobility from a youth perspective", the project consortium develops new mobility awareness strategies & peer learning approaches together with 15- 24 year olds. These are tested, discussed and evaluated with young people. The aim is to bring new trends & ideas into circulation, as well as to stimulate sustainable behavioural changes and patterns.

AIT project manager Karin Markvica: "We are very happy about the nomination in the category "Participation and Civil Society Engagement". With their mobility behaviour, youths and young adults make a significant contribution to achieving our climate goals in the long term. The 'youth codes' project enables us to cooperate well and exchange closely with the young generation in order to advance the mobility transition through strategies, methods and tools that are appropriate for the target group. The ÖGUT nomination is a great success for the consortium under the leadership of Research & Data Competence and helps to focus more on the young generation.
