IMAGINE21 - “Be the Change!“ digital technologies for people and environment

Jun 17
AIT presents future technologies 6G and quantum encryption

The title High-tech Made in Austria: 6G and other future technologies, AIT experts will present state-of-the-art developments and technologies at this year's virtual IMAGINE21 on 17 June 2021 - in Stream 1 at 17:30-18:00.

Thomas Zemen, Principal Scientist at the AIT Center for Digital Safety & Security, will present reliable wireless 6G communication systems. His presentation is about the mobile networking of people, but also of machines and physical objects, which is advancing inexorably, for example 5G technology is already being rolled out globally. In order to provide highly reliable communication for industrial control systems, robots, autonomous systems and much more in the course of the digitalisation of our society, further technical developments are necessary.

Hannes Hübel, leading AIT expert in the European Commission's Quantum Technology Flagship Programme, explains the background, including the extraordinary computing power of a quantum computer, which will bring extreme benefits to mankind in many areas (pharmaceutical industry, materials research, logistics, etc.). However, since a quantum computer also makes it possible to break the encryption technologies currently used for the secure exchange of data and thus confidentiality in communication can no longer be guaranteed in the future, a new technology is needed. Quantum key distribution, or QKD for short, is based on physical laws that cannot be broken even by a quantum computer. QKD is therefore an ideal replacement for the protocols that are currently vulnerable.

About Imagine21

Climate change, health, value creation, jobs, regional development: digital technologies are decisive levers for a change for the better in all these areas. On 17 June 2021, IMAGINE21 will present forward-looking solutions from start-ups, SMEs, industry, research institutions and administration. With the motto "Be the Change", the programme includes digital innovations on topics such as energy efficiency, artificial intelligence, health, new business models and smart cities and regions. The event of the Climate Protection Ministry (BMK) with its technology platforms, the Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Data Intelligence Offensive (DIO) will take place online in Vienna. On 18 June, the Austrian Computer Science Day (ACSD) will focus on the topic "Humans in the Digital Age" in 2021.
