AIT at the International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction (TEI)

TEI is the conference for Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction and was organised online this year by the University of Salzburg. The ACM International Conference addresses issues of human-computer interaction, novel tools and technologies, interactive art and user experience. AIT was represented by Georg Regal (Accessibility Chair) and Simone Kriglstein (Publicity Chair) as well as Head of Center for Technology Experience Manfred Tscheligi (Chair in the Graduated Student Consortium).

Georg Regal, Scientist at the Center for Technology Experience, is pleased to have been able to contribute to the success of the TEI conference as Accessibility Chair. Digital accessibility is one of the main research areas at the Center for Technology Experience. Digital accessibility is the process of making digital products and content usable for as many users as possible and not excluding people with disabilities from access to new media and technologies. It is important to the expert that a fully digital conference is also accessible and usable for all people. "Digital conferences offer new challenges compared to traditional face-to-face formats. It is therefore important to consider accessibility in all decisions," says Regal.

From the point of view of accessibility, a virtual conference does not always offer disadvantages, but also some advantages. For people with limited mobility, especially if they have to travel a long way, participation via virtual tools is definitely advantageous. Modern video conferencing tools also offer a wide range of possibilities that can be used. At the TEI conference, for example, the organizers made sure that all talks and zoom meetings were provided with subtitles. Live subtitles, for example, are a service that is unfortunately not available as standard in many conventional face-to-face conferences.
