EU project aims to find new diagnosis and treatment options for ulcerative colitis and atopic dermatitis

The European research project ImmUniverse aims to find new diagnosis and treatment options for people affected by ulcerative colitis and atopic dermatitis. A newly released short video introduces the project. The research project started in January 2020 with the collaboration of 26 international partners from academic research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, patient organisations and specialised SMEs. One of these partners is the AIT Competence Unit Molecular Diagnostics of the Center for Health & Bioresources.

The first year of the project was strongly influenced by the challenges posed by the COVID 19 pandemic. Clinical project activities in particular had to be postponed. Nevertheless, important milestones in the project were achieved, such as the enrolment of the first patients in the project's clinical trials, as well as the establishment of common standards for the handling, extraction, transport and quality control of biological samples taken from patients. In addition, approval was granted for in vitro studies that will allow pre-testing to optimise the ultrasound dose of a novel device that will later be used on colitis patients to trigger the enhanced release of disease biomarkers in the gut.
