How is Austria's road infrastructure inspected?

Roads are used by thousands of vehicles every day and need to be regularly inspected to prevent defects that could pose a serious risk to road users. This week, the programme P.M. Wissen on Servus TV explored what can be done to detect initial damage at an early stage, prevent accidents and save costs.
RoadSTAR, a mobile laboratory developed by AIT and equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, satellite navigation and camera technology, records all essential road parameters in a single pass without disrupting traffic flow. This increases the durability of the road structure while also improving safety.

And how can motorcyclists also be protected from danger spots? Together with the Vienna University of Technology, AIT road safety experts developed the Motorcycle Probe Vehicle, a road-legal KTM 1290 Super Adventure that has been converted into a high-performance measuring vehicle. It enables a driving dynamics analysis based on the respective driving behaviour and the interaction with the road infrastructure. The results show road sections that are particularly risky for motorcyclists – to prevent accidents before they happen.
