FELDBATT

The energy sector is undergoing a change towards a rising share of renewables and especially a decentralised energy supply, which leads to new challenges. These challenges influence the entire electricity supply chain: (1) Higher strains on the transmission grids, (2) challenges concerning the quality of supply in distribution grids, (3) volatility of renewable energy sources results in new challenges for marketing and (4) necessity to optimize the own consumption of decentralised RES to maximise cost savings. To overcome these challenges, flexibilities and amongst them most prominently battery storage systems are considered the be the solution. Especially battery systems are very cost-intensive, which requires an optimal usage of the storage capacities to result in an economic feasibility. As a result, a battery storage system needs to provide a multitude of different services. For the project FeldBatt one single 1 MW storage system with a capacity of 1 MWh is considered, with one major service being the provision of the means to maximise the local own consumption of PV and small hydropower generation. The problem regarding the use of one single storage capacity for that specific task, is the necessity to pay grid tariffs for the energy stored into and taken from the battery. To ensure economic feasibility, the transport of electrical energy between prosumers and battery needs to be done via direct lines. The project FeldBatt will focus on the following goals:

  • Increase of own consumption of local renewable generation up to 100 %
  • Reduction of electricity costs for the involved prosumers of at least 10 %
  • Ensure economic feasibility of the battery storage by the definition of additional services
  • Ensure the supply of critical infrastructure by using the storage capacities, direct lines and renewable energies for 1-3 days.
  • Development of control algorithms for the optimisation of the storage deployment with regards to the different services provided.
  • Installation of a demonstrator to test the developed business models and control algorithms under real-life conditions.

The innovative aspects of the project can be described as follows: (1) The project centres around the development of a multi-modal deployment strategy with respect to the use of local renewable energy and by connection a storage system with prosumers via direct lines. (2) The involved prosumers will reach an own consumption rating of 100 % from the renewable energy sources PV and small hydro. (3) Direct lines will be used to minimise the costs and maximise the income / costs savings. (4) The concept will keep in mind the possibility of a blackout thus reserving the necessary capacity and means to provide energy during such a scenario.

The project will result in the demonstration of a battery storage system (1 MW / 1 MWh) with a high visibility in an industrial / commercial region in Feldbach, whose deployment strategy will base on multiple different business models, a concept for the emergency power supply of critical infrastructure as well as insight on the use of one single large scale battery storage in an urban region.
