Expo Dubai 2020: AIT presents digital city planning know-how in the iLab

02.11.2021
AIT City Intelligence Lab demonstrates in the iLab of the Austria Pavilion how cities can be planned under the aspects of climate change with innovative technologies

With the City Intelligence Lab (CIL), the AIT Center for Energy will be an essential part of the i-Lab at the heart of the Austria Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020: As part of the world exhibition, the experts of the City Intelligence Lab will hold two days of workshops and presentations on the topic of "Sustainable Future Urban Planning" to show how cities can be planned under the aspects of climate change, energy and mobility. The workshops will take place on 4th November 2021 and 17th February 2022 in Dubai.

"We are pleased to be able to present the solutions and research approaches of the City Intelligence Lab as a pioneering and innovative example of Austria in the iLab of the Austria Pavilion. Our contribution to sustainable urban planning practice of the future was able to prevail in a major application process as one of Austria's most innovative contributions," says Anton Plimon, Managing Director of the AIT.

"In the City Intelligence Lab, scenarios such as the climate situation in city districts and the optimisation of people flows can be vividly simulated and acted out - an essential building block for the planning of resilient cities. However, the international showcase laboratory goes one step further and manages to include the user perspective in planning with the help of digital technologies. We are pleased to present our expertise to a broad international audience in Dubai," says Wolfgang Hribernik, Head of Center for Energy.

City Intelligence Lab - an international showcase lab
The lab is an interactive platform for exploring new forms and technologies for the urban planning practice of the future and follows the approach of co-creative development, the co-creation of new knowledge. Here, cutting-edge digital technology and innovative approaches meet big data and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered urban planning tools. Using augmented reality, real-time analyses and simulations can be experienced in 3D on an interactive platform. The CIL makes it possible to bring together the ideas of developers, investors and urban planners more quickly and cost-effectively and to ensure the sustainability of cities. Scenarios such as the climate situation in city districts can be vividly simulated and planned through.

Climate change in cities calls for new planning and implementation concepts
Urbanisation is a phenomenon of our time. Cities must shape their growth intelligently and find answers to the challenge of climate change. "The innovative achievement of future urban planning will be to use digital technologies to create diverse planning scenarios that offer a wide range of solutions for cities and their inhabitants. We have created the necessary infrastructure for this," explains Nikolas Neubert, Head of Competence Unit Digital Resilient Cities at the AIT Center for Energy. "The growth and densification of cities in particular exacerbate the problem of overheating during the summer months," continues Nikolas Neubert. This development poses a health burden for the population. "To make cities more resilient to this situation, we can use machine learning in the City Intelligence Lab to create microclimate simulations for summer and heat days with and without adaptation measures, run different climate models and visually process the results. This makes it possible to immediately see which measures would mean cooling for certain parts of the city," says Neubert.

AIT experts to present sustainable urban planning in Dubai on 4th November 2021
AIT experts Martin Traunmüller and Angelos Chronis will use a real city model in the workshop on 4th November under the motto "Sustainable Future Urban Planning" to show how parameters such as green spaces, open spaces, placement and size of buildings can affect the microclimate in a district. With the infrastructure of the City Intelligence Lab, they can also visualise a variety of possible planning scenarios at the touch of a button.

Innovations for cities and the built environment - international projects
In the Digital Resilient Cities research field, the Center for Energy at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology blends urban planning expertise with state-of-the-art city management and planning solutions. 60 percent of the projects are international. The team is active in more than 20 countries, know-how “Made in Austria” is in demand everywhere, whether in Germany, Argentina, Colombia or Uzbekistan.  https://cities.ait.ac.at/site/
